The concern is with infant botulism. Botulinum spores are found widely in soil, dust, and honey. Adults who swallow botulinum spores are almost never affected. When infants swallow the spores, however, the spores can germinate in their immature gastrointestinal tracts and begin producing botulinum toxin.

The reason is because honey can house a bacteria called botulism. Women used to mix honey and milk in a bottle and feed it to the baby. Furthur studies proved that the bacteria was in the honey, and that is why babies were being infected with botulism. The immunity system of the baby is not capable of breaking down that type of bacterium at such an early age. Hope I was some help to you, if you want furthur research you can look botulism up in a microbiology book or search wikipedia.com.

Honey, especially raw honey can harbor a form of botulism. Sounds scary but it is almost always harmless for those with a developed healthy immune system. This can make some babies sick although the probability is very low. This is the same reason you should not use honey in a hummingbird feeder. Seems a little odd huh? Honey is made from nectar, hummingbirds eat nectar but honey is risky for the birds.

A baby's gut can't defend itself against the botulism spores, and so they can colonize the intestinal tract, germinate and release botulinum neurotoxin. As a result, honey is not recommended for babies under a year old. It's recommended that you avoid giving baby anything that contains honey, or make sure that the cooking process kills any botulism spores that might be present. To kill botulism spores, the food must be cooked at 240 degrees Fahrenheit (this requires a pressure cooker) for at least 15 minutes. Botulism spores are very heat resistant - it takes more than six hours of boiling at 212 degrees Fahrenheit to kill the spores. The toxin is less resistant - boiling foods (at 212 degrees Fahrenheit) for 10 minutes will destroy the toxin

Honey can contain botulism. After 1 year, a person has enough stomach acid to destroy the bacteria. Babies are susceptible to infection before that.

Its because of a bacteria that is in the honey. When a child is older their body can get rid of the bacteria but a young child cannot and it makes them sick sometimes.
