(y^2-16)/(y^2+8y+16) * (3y^2-5y-2)/(y^2-6y+8) =

1. factor polynomials
(y-4)(y+4)/(y+4)(y+4) * (3y+1)(y-2)/(y-4)(y-2) =

2. simplify
(y-4)/(y+4) * (3y+1)/(y-4) =

3. multiply
(y-4)(3y+1)/(y+4)(y-4) =

4. reduce
(3y+1)/(y+4)

y^2-16/y^2+8y+16*3y^2-5y-2/y^2-6y+8
[(y^2-16)/(y^2+8y+16)]*[(3y^2-5y-2)/(y^2-6y+8)]
= [(y-4)(y+4)/(y+4)^2]*[(3y+1)(y-2)/(y-2)(y-4)]
= [(y-4)/(y+4)]*[(3y+1)/y-4)]
=(3y+1)/(y+4)
