Many people would not, but some would, perhaps your father was hoping to get laid off so he could get unemployment and also help someone along the way, but I give it the benefit of the doubt and say he did it because he's sick or just a great person.

I'm not in a position to give up my job for the charity of someone else. Perhaps you dad believes he will quickly find another position. Also, it could be that this is just the start of the layoffs and so it's not as big a sacrifice as you think.
