I have lived in NYC and visited Chicago, and here's my opinion:
Chicago is cleaner and the lakefront beautiful. You can probably afford an apartment there, too. It's diverse and has lots of variety, is fairly friendly for a big city, and it's still walkable in parts, for those who like city strolling.
NY is milder in the winter. It is cold, but Chicago is bitter cold.
Ny is dirtier and feels more foreign, less American. It's truly endless in variety, but NY kind of lacks easy recreation. You can ride your bike and join a gym, but I'll bet overall Chicago is more comfortable, like with a car, laundry, shopping, all except winter.
So why would I prefer NY? Because it's both pretty and ugly, clean and dirty, tough and kind, very international, totally dense with options, crass, cross, fun, and funny. Anything but boring. Also, the area surrounding NY is more interesting than around Chicago.
Long Island is beautiful, so are the Catskills, New England, PA, Philly, even New Jersey is a lot nicer than people think.
Around Chicago, I guess Wisconsin and the Michigan lakefront are nice.

Definitely Chicago, make comparisons in all the important categories and Chicago is the better city:
Lower Cost of Living - Chicago
Safer City - Chicago
Transportation - Same
Friendliness - Chicago
Nightlife - New York
Weather - Same, but both are terrible
Job Opportunities - Same
Diversity - New York(not by much)
Education - New York
Natural Beauty(lakes, parks, etc.) - Chicago
Family Environment - Chicago
Culture/Museums - New York
Better Pizza - Definitely Chicago!
All in all Chicago is the better city, it basically offers the same attractions New York does, just at a lower cost, and less congestion. New York is a great city, with a lot of diversity, and many cultural attractions. But for living purposes, it just doesn't compare, New York is an old city, and a lot of housing/apartments show that age. You pay for location, not quality. Whereas Chicago, you pay for both, at a much lower cost. Chicago is much more family friendly as well, and jobs are plentiful.

ok. well the answers would all be chicago since you asked this in the chicago section.
i do live in illinois, but my choice would definetly be new york, espeically if your on the younger side or are in your 20's or so.
theres a lot more going on in new york and new york is hte 2nd home of holywood stars.
plus good shopping.
it's justy awesome overall.
chicago looks the same but theres no good shopping and no anything. i live here and im acutally planning ot move to new york when I'm younger.
but it really all depends on your age. younger, new york. older, chicago.

Chicago. They have Kill Hannah and Fall Out Boy lol. But besides that it's a much better city. I hate NY. San Francisco is better than either one though.

it depends on your job. if your job pays well, surly NYC. if not, chicago is better living.
NYC is much bigger and more interentaional than Chicago, btu much costly than chicago. you find everything you dream in NYC, and chciago is not that good.
i used to go to chicago a lot, but never like it that much. after graduated from college, i moved to NYC. it is the heaven for single.

Sorry New Yorkers, but I'd say Chicago. You've got the best of everything there without the filth.

It depends on what you're looking for really.
But I'd say Chicago, the crime rate is less and theres more fun things to do.
