My girlfriend and I are both 23 years old. We don't drink or do drugs. We gamble for fun but easily know our limits. Is it a difficult lifestyle to live in Vegas?

What are the pros and cons?

ex. high crime over good weather etc...

i used to only think of gambling, drinking and partying when i thought of vegas until i moved here. you can totally avoid all the casinos and it would seem like you're in phoenix or any other desert suburban town.

pros: it's relatively cheaper. i'm from california and i could never afford to buy a house there. but i can here. (all my fam is out here so that's a plus for me.) if you're into hotel management or in the service industry, vegas is a great place to start off your career. hmmm... i guess there aren't that many pros.

cons: not much greenery. i miss the trees and grass.
no ocean, only a dirty lake mead and other man made lakes. people here are always in a rush and very materialistic (reminds me of socal). there are car accidents everyday (due to sheer stupidity), people drive like maniacs (probably bc they're drunk), and the hot weather sucks. my power bill for the month of july was over $230 (and i live in a pretty small house... only 1700 sq ft) !!!! i'm sure it will be higher for july.

i think as a young couple starting out, you could definitely save money out here and have a good time. just be alert for other drivers (don't trust them! there are so many red light and stop sign runners here, so beware when going through an intersection.) i'm 25 and have been living here for 3 years now. it's an okay place to live for now. i just had a son and don't really like the thought of raising him here, so we may consider moving back to cali by the time he's 5.

I used to live in Vegas, would still be there if the husband was not transfered.

Let me start off with this is a very interesting city to live in. You will either love it or tollerate it and it is not like when you visit. Personally, I loved living there, but I have friends that don't like it but stay because of their jobs.

You really wont gamble too much and the crime can be high depending on where you live, you will also need to decide if you want to buy or rent a house. That will make a difference and will also determine how much money you can spend on it. You will also need to know what you will do for money and what proffession you want to look into. Many require Sheriffs cards.

As far as living, we are lucky, we love to go out and don't have children so it was a great lifestyle for us. We did not go to the strip except on special occasitions to see or a show or if we had friends/family in town. I loved the 24/7 lifestlye and that most everything was open. I also loved the weather and lack of bugs. But, mind you , it does get cold in the winter. Water is an issue, as you will be living in the desert and there are times in the summer that you cannot purchase gas. The air quality can be bad when there are a lot of fires or when the wind picks up and driving there when it rains is like driving on ice. It is very different, but overall, I loved it and have been trying to convince the hubby to move back... :)

It's about as hard to live here as anywhere even though some may say there is more "temptation" here. Once you have lived here long enough the Strip seems to "disappear" from mind. There are people who have lived here and haven't been to the strip in years.

The larger picture of Las Vegas is different. The stereotype is that we all work in casinos, gamble and that nothing is important. Vegas is full of families, non-profit organizations, over 300 CCSD schools, places of worship, etc.

I have lived here for 4 years transplanted from Southern California. In my years here I have met people who loved the town and its convenience (24 hours) and attitude. I am indifferent to Las Vegas, personally because its vibe does not fit my personality anymore. It has been difficult to make and keep good friends due to the transient nature of the city.

I've been here 25 years. The funny thing is once you get five blocks either side of the Strip, you're pretty much in middle America.
The pros are the weather. Yes, it's very hot for about three months out of the year. But, with restaurants and shopping open 24 hours a day, you adjust your "out and about" time. One of the cons is the influx of people to the area who are escaping "nanny" government in other places and want to overlay on our law books and life styles the very things they are escaping from. I call them the "New Puritans": Folks who lie awake at night worrying that someone out there is having fun.
BTW, I had my last drink on May 22, 1964. I don't gamble. I raised four children here. None are in jail or on drugs.

The locals say it is easy asl long as you don't gamble. As long as you stay our of the area west of the Stratosphere going north to down town then you should be o.k. as far as crime.
