It's that pull to the center thing I keep trying to explain. Once a candidiate has to run, the last thing they want is to be easily labelled and marginalized. Being a liberal insures that you're about to deal with the canned attacks.

Since most American don't know a progressive from a hole in the ground, she can spin that term to mean anything she wants or needs it to. In her case Progressive means "I'm just like you, America. Embrace me as your leader."

It all goes back to Reagan when he said that liberal was a dirty word. That was roughly the time when many liberals started calling themselves progressive. People like Hillary know that they cannot claim to be moderates and liberal has a negative connotation. So they call themselves progressive to seem more palatable to the mainstream moderates. The problem is that nobody buys this ploy. So many have done it that now progressive just equals liberal in most people's minds.

For the same reason republicans do not call themselves Tories or Loyalists. The term liberal has been hijacked by right wing extremists and is no longer accurate. It does have a strong emotional anchor.

Liberals like to go by many titles, "progressives" "free thinkers" etc.etc. Liberals are neither progessive, as they show no progress, nor are they free thinkers, when they parrot everything michale moore says. They are niether "tolerant" nor "fair". All they really want is their way, and to legislate that agenda to those who would reject it...
