Yes, I'm at my 4th level in Kung Fu, we use sashes in place of belts.

Karate, no; self defense, yes. I usually wear a brown belt with a black holster for the S&W.

I took karate for 2 years and made it to blue belt.
Stopped because it was too expensive.
