Mosquitoes /Gnats/Craneflies/other biting Flies; are in the order Diptera. Sorry to disagree with another answerer before me.
Major distinguishing differences -Mosquitoes have an elongated sucking mouthpart and are roughly twice the size of gnats, also make irritating buzz in the ear. After rainstorms, many females are present in puddles and there is a high liklihood of many bites. Female Mosquitoes and other biting flies, suck blood, while the males all drink nectar from flowers.
Mosquitoes are dark grey to black and have elongated mouthparts, range in size from the grain of rice to bigger than a dime.
Lots of individuals believe that Craneflies are mosquitoes(at least 1-1 1/2" and brown) when in fact, they are harmless, nutrituous food for many animals, like bats, and are mainly active at night.
Gnats look like mini flies (1/8 the size of a housefly) and appear in swarms on hot /humid days or toward evening.

Gnat is a non-technical term for members of a certain order of insects. Within that order, one family is the mosquito family. So all mosquitos are gnats, but not all gnats are mosquitos. It's roughly analogous to
primates-hominidae (the family of which we are a member).
