Joe Montana quarterbacked in college at Notre Dame and was only a third round draft choice for the San Francisco 49ers, one of the best value picks ever. He won Super Bowls for one of the most dominant teams in the NFL through the 80's.
His coach was Bill Walsh, who died this morning of leukemia at age 75. Walsh is the genius behind the West Coast offense, a system of which many coaches are disciples including Mike Shanahan, quarterback John Elway's coach during two Super Bowl wins in the 90's.
John Elway was a Stanford Cardinal in college, Bill Walsh's alma mater, though Elway played for his head coach father, Jack. John was drafted by the Colts but was traded to the Denver Broncos without playing a down by John's request in 1983. John Elway spent the rest of his entire NFL career with Denver.
