Your question is ambiguous. Do you mean how many years the average mortgage is initially for or how many years, on average, do people keep their mortgages before selling their home?

The most common original mortgage length is 30 years. The average length of time that a mortgage is actually held is about 5 years.

35 years. You can go up to 40 years these days. We may see that change as the Boomers start to move to smaller digs then it will be a 15 year loan as they will want to keep it paid off even if they take a mortgage for the last house!
