I have decided that within the next year I am going to climb a local radio tower. It has always enticed me so, it's about time. My question is, should I worry about getting zapped (bring a multimeter?), what kind of harness should I be equipped with, and what kind of clipping routine should I use. What is the worst punishment I could get if caught? Has anyone ever done this? Also, are there specific towers that would be better to climb than others? (I see different shapes and such all the time) thanks guys!
PS: I know the logical answer to all my questions is not to do it at all, but my mind is pretty much made up.

Make it a positive experience by contacting a local amateur radio club (start with arrl.org). You could then get permission, help someone out, and learn how to do it safely.

Just when the cops face plant you in the turf to cuff you when they arrest you for trespassing. ; D Seriously, though, research has been mixed on the effects of EMF (electro-magnetic fields), but they do not appear to be harmful, at least not in any immediate way. If you have any fillings or any metal rods from repairs due to other stunts gone wrong, those might decide to vibrate or even build up static charges. It does not appear to have any microwave capability, those can do some real, immediate damage. The real potential for injury would, of course, be falling (or, at least, the abrupt stop at the end of the fall) or electrical lines. Given the exposure to the elements, damaged insulation on the electrical supply is not an insignificant risk. And speaking of which, I'd make sure the potential for T-storms is O.

You might want to read up on what close-proximity RF does to raw meat before you start your ascent while the power is on. There's a reason they don't service those towers live! Getting an electrical shock is the LEAST of your worries!
Have you ever seen what a microwave oven does to a piece of meat?
You won't get "caught", by the time anyone sees you there you will be seared to the structure, and will smell a LOT like bacon!

You might or might not get cooked, as one answer describes. It depends on the type of facility, which you don't mention.
Your main problem will be ever finding a job after you get out of prison for felony trespass, conspiracy to commit terrorist acts, and malicious property damage. The cops will be waiting for you when you come back down, and they will handcuff you on the spot and you won't see the light of day for 3 to 5 years, at which point you will have to pay a fine of $20,000 to $100,000.
So don't be that stupid, okay? If your mind is still made up to climb it, then I don't need to tell you what to do to yourself. The guys on your cell block will do it to you.

There are several wind-generator companies actively advertising for riggers/service personnel right now. They want people who are willing to work a long way off the ground, they train, and they pay well. Go apply. If the job doesn't cure you of your desire to climb risky structures for free, you'll at least have some knowledge of how to do it.

Don't forget to write a will. It'd also be nice to leave a note of apology for the EMS folks and anyone else who might have to deal with your rescue or recovery of your remains. Have fun, I guarantee the folks left behind won't.
