World War I ended differently for different countries.
Russia dropped out on March 3, 1918, after signing the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with the Central Powers.
Bulgaria signed an armistice on September 29, 1918 at Saloniki.
The Ottoman Empire capitulated at Mudros on October 30, 1918.
The Austro-Hungarian empire disintegrated in October 1918; during the last week of October, declarations of independence were made in Budapest (Hungary), Prague (Czechoslovakia) and Zagreb (Croatia). On October 29, the imperial authorities asked Italy for an armistice, which was signed in the Villa Giusti, near Padua, on November 3. Later, Austria and Hungary signed separate armistices following the overthrow of the Habsburg monarchy.
In Germany, a republic was proclaimed on November 9, 1918. The Kaiser fled the country. On November 11, an armistice with Germany was signed in a railroad carriage at Compiègne, which signaled the and of hostilities.

There were several factors leading to the end of the war, of course. There's never a simple single answer to questions like these. And an extensive answer can't be given here due to the lack of space, plus I don't really want to type that much. One of the primary reasons was the Germans had already been at war with primarily the British and the French for over two years. By the time the U.S. entered the war, Germany had nearly already exhausted its resources and ability to continue the war. With transportation and war production technology at the point it was in 1917 and '18, fighting the British and the French, then add to that the U.S., it was too overwhelming for the Germans to continue. Good question.

The Spanish Flu. It killed so many people of fighting age (20-40) that the end of the war was inevitable. The Spanish Flu was the leading cause of death during WWI.
