George Washington - he was the first and this couldn't have been easy w/o any precedent - he resisted becoming King George - and he didn't overstay his welcome but retired gracefully to Mount Vernon from leading as General Washington and then as President Washington.

One factoid in Wikipedia I thought was currently relevant:
"Washington's Farewell Address [when leaving Presidency]was a primer on republican virtue and a stern warning against involvement in foreign wars."

For me it is quite easy to pick George Washington from this list as the best president. The reason for this is that he had the opportunity to first be King of America and secondly (as the first president) to establish several precedents. The most well known is his decision that a president should serve no more than two terms. Clearly he proved his mettle with his leadership during the revolution and proved his ethics and love for the country when he walked away from power. No other president has proven themselves so completely.

As a point of information I would selected Franklin Roosevelt from this list as the worse president. A number of the programs he initiated were actually developed by President Herbert Hoover. His famous fireside chats were actually begun by the first lady Lou Henry Hoover as part of her radio talks to the Girl Scouts. While he tried some programs to help people during the depression, it was the economic engine geared up during World War II that ended the depression. Most importantly he did a number acts which were unconstitutional (per decisions of the Supreme Court). As the single president who went against the Washington precedent of a two term limit, and his unconstitutional acts he demonstrated a disregard for the intent of the Founders second only to that of President Lincoln.

Well it should be George Washington and Abraham Lincoln together because Washington set the precedent for how a president should behave and serve and like others said he helped shaped our country he was always there when our nation needed him he was a great commander in chief and a great president, Abraham lincoln because not only did he end slavery but kept our country united and was a great leader.

Wow. Tough one. I like 'm all. I'd have to go with number 4 though. Teddy had REALLY proven himself to be a man's man (so to speak) even before becoming president. The others had proven themselves too, but Teddy was so unselfish in putting himself out there as a real leader under overwhelming conditions.

I'm going to go with George Washington. He got the whole thing started and as first there was no one with whom to compare his performance. Everyone after him just built on what he began.

I agree with you, he saved this country out of economic chaos, the new deal, helped starving people to find work and provide for their families. Sadly, there will never be a President like him again.
