How long ago did you lose it? Generally, more socks get 'totally lost' when they are washed in a 'top loading machine' because when they 'spin' the socks at the top can 'spin out' and get 'chewed up' rapidly by the 'moving parts' that are causing the machine to 'spin.' That is probably where one of your sock 'disappeared to' ... so why don't you just go see if you can't buy 'several' pairs 'just like those favorite ones' ...

mmmmm my crystal ball is in the shop.
If I have a left over sock after sorting laundry it goes back into the dirty laundry pile and if the sock gods favor me the match will turn up next wash. If I see the same lonely sock for several washes, I'll toss it, or use it to clean the dip stick when I check the oil in my truck, or something. That's usually when the match shows up.

No. There is this little creature no one told us of called the dryer monster and it eats the match to all our favorite socks. My cure was to buy two pairs of my favorites.
