i spent a lot of money on a dual breast pump that the hospital lactation consultant recommended (it was not a medela, but was between 200 to 300 bucks) and it worked fine, but with my 4th, my husband bought me an Evenflo single electronic pump from Wal-Mart, was between 40 and 50 bucks and I liked that one better than the expensive one. You can adjust the suction on it and I got more milk expressed than I did with the expensive brand and I don't think it took much longer if any. Good luck!

Not sure if you tried the Avent manual pump but I like that one for an occasional pump. I had to take out the "cushion" in the sheild because I have larger breast, but I would pull the trigger only a few times and then hold it down and the milk would continuously flow. I could pump 4-5 oz in less than 10 minutes. That pump was about $50.
I also like Medela pumps - you can get the Swing pump which is a single side electric for about $150. The swing is the pump in style advanced cut in half.

I personally feel that the most expensive pumps are the most comfortable and easiest to use. There are ways of cutting costs on these as well. There are a lot of insurance companies that will help pay for either the purchase or rental of one. Go to a medical supply store and ask. They will know or call your insurance company for you. You can also check stores that sell used clothes or baby items. Ask around with friends and family to see if anyone of them has one that you could borrow or buy. You'd be surprised how many within your circle have such a thing.

I think you'll be hard pressed to find a breast pump that is comfortable & also works that isn't on the more expensive side. The Medela Pump-in-style is probably your best bet, but it's about $150 to $300 depending on the exact model. You might want to check w/the local Lactation consultants. Sometimes they have some available for people to buy at a discount.

I found a double breast pump at walmart for 50 dollars that was electric, that controls the pressure to help with comfort. I can't remember the exact brand, but look there and you should see it.

I've only used Medela Pump in Style. You could buy a used Medela pump at a consignment shop and just purchase new breast shields. That would make it a lot cheaper (Medela would say you shouldn't do this, but a motor is a motor).

As a mother of 2 and doing it twice i feel a manual pump is better... there is one that I really really liked... you can buy it at wal-mart and its by Gerber... it takes a little time to start pumping but it does not hurt at all... good luck and Congrats!!!

I never could get the hang of a breast pump since I hardly ever used one. I just gave up and expressed it with my hand into the bottle. A bottle with a larger top is much easier. It worked far easier and faster for me than a pump.
