There is a lot of good advice out there...The best way to start is to go to the library and look at some small business magazines...You want to be educated about business in general. Don't forget to go online also, there are some government sites for small business.
A great idea is to do something that interests you. Never go into a business without knowing about it. Some people have been successful by turning a hobby into a business. Do what you know! Your customers want to have confidence that you are really knowlageable about your product or service.
Remember that you are fulfilling a NEED.
BEWARE of companys that offer for a fee a business of your own...If it was that easy, everyone would do it . You will see lots of offers like that, and they make it look so good and easy....
It is also not a reliable thing to ask friends for advice and ideas...With all the best intentions, they are not experts, and they will say things to please you...That's not to say that good, common sense advice should not be listened to. A good businessperson has the ability to gather information and make a DECISION...
With the proliferation of cheap consumer grade junk, most of it coming from China, I think your best bet is to have a quality specialty. People still like to be pampered.
I will give you an example. I went to Ebay because I was not able to buy mug type shaving soap around here. I like to use the old fashioned shaving mug and brush.
Turned out that there were several small business owners that make shaving and other soaps at home, and sell online!
It's rather low-tech, soap has been made for almost a thousand years...
But here is the thing. They KNOW all about making different kinds of soap, how to add color and scent. They have soaps that you cannot just go to wall-mart for. I like to be pampered myself, and I do a lot of shopping online. There are some small businesses that I buy from...some carry aftershave imported from England that has been made for over a hundred years...
That's just an example. I myself went to Jewelry school, and learned to set Diamonds and repair Jewelry, and I make extra money that way doing something that I like, but my basic advice is the same. KNOW YOUR BUSINESS
I hope that helps...Yours, Milton

I didn't always know I would be a business owner but I always had a passion for wanting to be a successful business owner one day. It just so happens that recently I have started my own business and it has so much potential. The business is getting greater every day! I personally believe that the most important personality factor to creating and running a successful business is drive. You need to be dedicated and willing to stick to your plans, create goals and really try your hardest to reach them, and accept change. Things are never in black and white so you must adapt to what's going on. Running a business is hard work and a full time job until it gets off the ground and where you want it to be. But after all the work, it really pays off.

List the type of things you do that interest you. If you don't love what you are doing forget it, as you will soon forget about it.
Next, check with your city and state about licensing, etc. Go speak with someone at city hall. If you know a business owner talk to them. You will also need a bank account and be able to pay for materials - your bank can help you with that. If this is just a service you provide you still have to get there and back so make sure you have transportation. Above all keep good records of what you spend, and what you make. Even if you don't have to report it as income you will know if you are making a profit and is a good skill to have for your own home some day.

At 14, about the only businesses available to you are things like babysitting, dog walking, or lawn care.

Good luck.
