It really depends on what you pay for your broadband and the type of service. If your area supports DSL or cable modem connectivity (based on distance from services) you can get upwards of 6 megabits per second (6,000,000 bits per second). Satelite on the otherhand often relies on a modem for transmitting data (not like DSL or Cable which transmit both ways over the connection).

Typically, dialup maxes out at 53kbps (53000 bits per second). With a good connection and compression, you can double that speed. That equals AT&T's cheapest package for upload speeds.

Check out DSL Reports (link below) for reviews of several ISPs. You can filter by your ZIP code to get an idea of what people think.

$15/month
Downstream Speed: Up to 768 Kbps
Upstream Speed: Up to 128 Kbps

Let's put to You this way, try watching full length video on
dial up like on You Tube.com and then try watching them on
Broad Band. Actually broadband can be 100 times faster.

Much, much faster ! I would say the difference between broadband and cable is less discernible, but you'll notice a huge improvement from dial-up to broadband. :)
