my father's engine (think evenrude 25HP) decided not to start while out on the water so he had to pull the case off and pullstart it to get back to the pier. after coming home it still wouldnt start and we couldnt get it to start with the ripcord either from once the engine was cold.

checked battery - ok

when he turns the key we were hearing a rapid click sound but the starter didnt shoot up or turn. he figured it was the starter.

my uncle came over and wanted to try something so he hotwired the starter directly with some jumper cables and it started up right away twice. so they decided it must be the solenoid.

but after that my father tried the key again for the hell of it and now that works fine, the thing just instantly starts. we are wondering what it could be because he is saying he will take it out on the water again if it continues to work but wanted to get the extra part if he could figure out what it was that was causing the problem.

any idea?

That clicking usually means it is not getting enough juice to turn over. If the battery is OK, check all your connections from your battery to the starter. Sometimes the wires get brittle and corroded. That would explain the intermittent malfunction.

And, what's the question? you obviously wired around the solenoid and found out that was the problem, so, replaces the solenoid and your problem is corrected. I would check all my wiring if I were you. Where I fish it would cost you the prices of the boat to be hauled in, if you had a radio to call for help. Change the soleniod before you burn out the starter now.

For every hour I use my boat, I work on it for an hour, if everything is to my liking then I wash and polish my boat, or clean the top but, there's always maintenance on a boat, never leave it go or this wouldn't have happen. You should know enough about your engine to get it started again also.

Im picking it was the solenoid, or you may have a flat spot on the starter, if its a while since its been used that may be the problem. spray some silicone spray over the electrics every time you have finnished using it, thios may help too.

corroded + or - wire . It`s probably internally in the wire where you can`t see it. Heat increases resistance which limits flow of electricity. I would replace battery terminal wires. with rip cord your magneto needs a good ground to function. If it has points or module it`s needs a good ground and positive to function good.
