Hi there!
First, keep in mind the fact that there are different companies out there that are selling different types of RAM memory. In addition, if the RAM memory is made by a famous RAM company maker, then this can also raise the price of a RAM memory.
When you do shop around, make sure of 2 things:
1) It's a known brand (doesn't have to be a famous one, just a familiar one)
2) Buy the memory from a big electronic store (Mostly Best Buy (TM) or Circuit City (TM), don't buy it from your "store across the street".
Have a nice time shopping!
:-)

Just like cars, TVs, and every other product on the market, it really depends on if you are comparing apples to apples.
If they were both 512MB of RAM, had the same type of connector, etc., it's common for them to have different prices.
This does NOT necessarily mean that the lower priced one is any worse than the other, but if it was a major price difference, you may want to wonder why.
It could be that the lower cost RAM has a better deal for buying parts, or buys them in larger quantities. It could be that they pay less for labor to manufacture them. It could be they use cheaper components. It could be they are trying to get rid of old stock and selling them cheaper.
Just like any other product, pricier doesn't always mean better, but if you see any major differences (would you buy a new car for $5,000 without wondering what was wrong with it?) you should certainly check into it.

There are different types of RAM--the difference is difficult to explain, but it has to do with how information is written and rewritten in the chip. Get the make and model information from your motherboard--or just print out all of your system information--to help the store find the RAM you actually need.

Most likely different companies. Its not necessary cheap material. This is where you pick the company you like. if its san disk or someother brand its okay, but if it sounds like something out of harry potter than DON"T BUY IT.

They can be from different manufacturers or have different costs of labor. There are also loss leaders, items sold at a loss to get you in to the store to buy other stuff.
