I made my first appointment at the OBGYN office and the person on the phone said that I would be assigned a midwife, but not a doctor. What is the difference? Will she stil be doing my pelvic exams, etc.?

An OB/GYN is a doctor, a midwife is not. An OB can deal with any kind of pregnancy - normal or high risk, and can perform c-sections for birth if necessary. Mid-wives usually only deal with normal pregnancies and cannot perform any kind of surgery. Also, midwives tend to be more toward the "natural" rather than the medical side of things as far as birth goes... meaning they are more likely to just let your body do what it's supposed to do, unless there is some kind of problem. OBs tend to treat every woman like they are having a complicated birth and like to intervene a lot.
As far as prenatal appointments, the midwife can do everything the OB can.

Midwives have a more natural approach to pregnancy and childbirth. I had an OB with my first and hated it. I felt like just another patient when I would see her so I decided on a Midwife for my second and I LOVED everything about it. She took the time to get to know me and my family, what I wanted from my pregnancy and delivery and she made it happen. I consider her a friend now, not a doctor I'll never see again. The office I went to had both OB/GYN's and Midwives and I had the option to deliver where ever I wanted. I chose a hospital, because I wanted that NICU close by just in case. My experience with seeing a Midwife effected me so deeply that I'm not stopping with my RN, but am going to go on to become a Certified Nurse-Midwife.

My midwife does all the same things my ob/gyn did. The difference is that my midwife spends much more time with me, I don't have to wait for an hour after my appt time to see her, and she doesn't rush me out of the office to make up time. When I go into labor, she will be with me from start to finish, not like an ob/gyn that only comes in at the end stages of labor. If there are any major problems during the birthing process, there will be an ob/gyn on call at the hospital.

Well with my first two children I had an OB. With this baby I have been going to a midwife and truthfully I do not see a big difference. The only difference I have experienced is my OB was a man and my midwife is a woman. Other than that the procedures have been the same.

an obgyn deals more with problems that occurs in pregnancy and confirm some problems for example down syndrome where as a midwife wont be able 2 confirm that but the midwife is the one that check up with u at ur appointment 2 check ur well being and if they think something may be wrong they might referrer u 2 ur obgyn
