I'm not asking the formula of making basic pattern (i have a lot already). i'm asking for your sharing especially those who lives in usa and europe. I read western books and seems like to make basic pattern, you must purchase the simplest style pattern then make adjustment on it using a kind of technique (i saw it is similar to drappery for me). is it? have you ever tried using formula? so you don't have to purchase from available pattern? if you also tried formula, then which one is the most comfort for you, formula or adjustment technique?
and how do you make changes on basic pattern to make new style? using that 'drappery' technique again? or...???
i (we in this country) usually used formula to make a basic pattern and to change it, we also gain experienced but yes, there's still some formula for it...it's quite techinal and measureable. i mean, drappery is like not that technical (and we have math's formula to make it...each method of making has it's own formula...)

i'm asking for your experience in making patterns, whether for yourself or others...
thank you...it's a new knowledge for me too, to know that western books teach how to make basic pattern by using available pattern while for my own definition, basic pattern is basic, not following industrial standar and make adjustment about it...
for me basic pattern is the basic of the even simplest style. it's like a raw pattern and made from specific math and technical formula...
i wish i can find cool sewing website so i can show what basic pattern i made looks like (but not with the formula ofcourse... (^.^)people must have it from course or books. it's not for free actually, no one will give it for free, i think...)...i suspect industry even used one of methods i know to make basic patterns...
it's weird that making basic pattern seems like 'expensive' in us/europe (i saw amazon.com), while in my place, the books with complete info is quite affordable.but we take course for finishing tech.

There are books with basic patterns in them, and then you make design changes according to your own imagination. There are also computer programs. http://books.google.com/books?id=CwBpQfZvQFUC&pg=PA104&ots=qnWTLHsiXN&dq=basic+clothing+patterns&sig=6uzjanrJRQKaHv800S8JnLQ3PCQ#PPA103,M1

It's not straightforward, and those thought patterns have served you well for a good chunk of your life. You developed them in response to a situation you lived in when you were little, and they helped you cope. That may not seem obvious now, but almost all such patterns that can be seen to be 'old', and not serving us well, have their roots in the past. After all, we're not stupid, we wouldn't have got into those patterns without a reason. This is why a psychotherapist or counsellor is often the best route for changing - since having someone who understands the process and can mirror back to you what is hard to see yourself, can help you face whatever lies behind the thought pattern, etc, is what can help you move forward. Otherwise, those old patterns keep coming back. That said, it's worth trying things on your own to see if you can make a difference. Try noting the occasions when those thought patterns occur - and when they don't. Can you identify the triggers? If so, can you begin to connect the trigger to something you know about your life, yourself, your experience? If so, what is the thought pattern trying to do in protecting you from something relating to that experience? The exact wordings here will have to be adapted to the sort of thought pattern you're grappling with, but hopefully you get the idea. Once you know what the pattern protects you from, it's a case of having the courage and the skill to look whatever it is square in the face.

I'm not sure what you are asking for. Are you looking for a way to make clothes for many different people or just for yourself?
I use a garement that fits well but has worn out and take it apart for the basic pattern - just change details like neckline type or pants length of fullness depending on what I want.
But this will only work for me or someone about my size.
I hope you get some good information because this is an interesting question.
