You see it a lot in movies and tv, but is it legal? I would think its allowed. Would the government make you fit your car in there if your car doesnt fit, and would the government tell you to not use it to store your things?

My dad owns the house. I was just wondering if there was a law against it. I live in the L.A. county of California. We cant fit our cars in the garage because the space is way to small to reasonably fit a car in there, so we use it to store things. I just hope the city people coming by to inspect it wont make us take out our stuff.

We store stuff like boxes full of old school books, shoes, clothes; plus wood, broken vcrs, a desk, and more boxes.

It doesn't have anything to do with the government, it would be a city/county ruling.

Some will allow you to store cars, furniture, boxes, etc in there, but you cannot turn it into a living space, or extra bedroom without having proper permits, and such.

Gosh if they made that illegal to use your car as a storage room, we would be over run by garage, yard, and driveway sales. We would see a mass increase in items being sold on eBay, the local thrift stores would be overloaded, and I suspect the city dump would be years trying to get caught up on the mass influx of junk. I personally believe a garage should be for cars, but that is just my personal opinion. There are no laws either way.

No. Your landlord or insurance company might object depending on what you stored and how you stored it and perhaps you would be violating city code for some reason, but your car, with its gasoline tank and carbon monoxide exhaust, is far more dangerous than almost anything that might be stored (propane and acetylene being exceptions.)

Why would it be illegal to store things in your own garage? My garage is full of things.
