staying in a hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. Only planning to stay on the strip as far as shopping, watching shows, gambling, etc. We already got transportation to & from airport. We plan to walk or ride the Taxi when needed to get rides to another hotel located on the strip. My question is: ARE THE TAXI RIDES EXPENSIVE in Las Vegas? IS A RENTAL CAR NECESSARY?

No, a rental car is not necessary.

This should just about cover the public transportation options in Las Vegas.

For taxi info
http://www.taxi.state.nv.us/faresfees.htm
Taxi rate - $3.20 for the 1st 1/8th mile, .25c each additional 1/8th mile.

Monorail
http://www.lvmonorail.com

Strip Trolley
http://www.lasvegasstriptrolley.com

Deuce/CAT bus
http://www.rtcsnv.com
It's $5 for a 24hr Deuce pass, but it's only $2.50 for a 24hr CAT pass. Each is good for the other. If you board the Deuce with a CAT pass they will charge you an extra .50c and issue you another 24hr pass($3 total)

Taxis in Vegas are a little expensive, more so than in New York City or San Francisco - but they are still cheap overall b/c you end up NOT going as far. If you plan on walking most of the time and only plan to take a taxi for longer distances, then you are probably looking only at a $10-15 taxi ride total - and you can split that among all that ride the taxi.

A rental car is NOT necessary at all - unless you want to drive further away from Las Vegas to see some of the other attractions (Lake Mead, Lake Las Vegas, etc - which are a short drive away and a rental car would definately come in handy).

Taxis and even buses will do just fine for the majority of people - that's all i use when I get there and I've NEVER had a problem. Just be careful that the Taxis DOES NOT take the long way around to the strip when you get out of the airport (dont let them take the tunnel - the price comes out double to ~$30 when it should only cost around $15-18 at most).

Hope this helps, have fun and good luck!

Not any more than NY etc. We drive from So Cal in 4 hours but use taxis to get to anywhere we can't walk. Like the show at LVU -or somewhere far and we want to drink a bit. You can walk everywhere on the newer strip and also ride the new overhead tram which is a great deal-in fact its free or almost. Walk from casino to casino anyway or you will fry. Have fun-Don't worry about a rental-you won't need it. PS Blue Man Group was great. The Excalibur dinner show was fun. Ceasars new mall is 3 or 4 stories of everything beyond the mura;ls and statues and extravagance--in case your tired of hanging out by the pool and gambling and shows-also any of the Cirque de soliel shows too-

definitely no rental car is necessary. if you do get a rental car, you probably won't be able to move around las vegas blvd. very fast. you are better off taking the new monorail, or a taxi. there are taxis at all hotel lobbies in the front. they are pretty cheap, considering the fact that you're only going around las vegas strip.

taxi drivers know the best routes.. like ones in the back, so you get places faster. some taxi drivers there are crazy though

Don't take a taxi and don't rent a car. Take the Deuce; it's a bus that runs up and down the strip from Mandalay Bay to Fremont street and you can get an all day pass for only $5 per person.

I did that last year and I'm planning on doing it again when I go in August. Its a great deal.

You definitely do not need a car. No matter what you want to do in Vegas there is a better way to get around than a rental. I am a travel agent and I NEVER included a car when people want to stay on the strip.

I say get the car. You can get some great deals on cars, I got mine last October for $12 per day. Go on orbitz.com and monitor rates then book directly with the car company for booking and if the price drops which it almost always does, cancel and rebook at the lower rate. Parking in Vegas is free everywhere on the strip. You can park at any hotel/casino and walk around from there. You can pick your car up at the airport, it's really easy. You will then have your transportation to and from taken care of really easy on your own schedule. Vegas is so easy to navigate. We learned our way around the first day. With a car you can easily drive around old Vegas if you like. You will spend more in taxis then on your car. Also, valet parking is free at all hotels. You just need to tip them. Go on rentalcodes.com and you can get discount codes to use for the rental cars if you book on line. For more Vegas info I highly recommend tripadvisor.com go to the forums, Nevada and Vegas.

Couple more points for getting the car:

you can do a day trip to lake mead or maybe the Canyon depending on how long you're there. Or the valley of fire.

Also, if you have to check out way before your flight leaves for home you can easily keep stuff in your car and go for a drive to another hotel or another town or whatever. It's much easier than checking your bags at the hotel and having to go back and get them. This way you have your stuff with you all day.

No, you don't need a rental car. The Deuce bus is your best bet. $5 for a 24 hour pass. It goes everywhere, not just on the strip. You just have to get a bus route book and it will tell you which bus to get on to get to whereever you are going. The Deuce goes on Boulder Hwy. (lots of casinos there too), the mall, etc. (so not just the LV strip).
