I know that there is a certain period before ovulation when our own discharge in our vagina kills off the sperm. Does anyone know when that time frame is?

Well, that is definitely not true-- especially the only at certain times part. Your vaginal secretions do create a hostile environment for sperm, but the ejaculation contains fluids that protect the sperm and keeps it alive through its journey (to put it really simply).

I've learned quite the opposite - that your discharge actually encourages and helps the sperm reach your egg (gives them something easy to swim in).

Oh that is SO not true!! In fact, before your period, the discharge actually HELPS the sperm get to the egg.

NATURAL CONTRACEPTION

There are several methods of avoiding pregnancy without the use of devices or medications. In all of these methods, a woman learns to recognize her fertile periods and she abstains from sexual activity during those days.

Sympto-thermal Method: www.serena.ca
also know as Natural Family Planning

a woman measures her body temperature, the thickness of the discharge from the vagina and other body signs
costs are for a basal thermometer, a modest instruction fee and a manual to learn the method (instruction is in Vancouver)
Billings Ovulation Method: www.billingsmethod.com, www.woomb.org

a woman learns to recognise a particular type of mucus secreted from her cervix without which sperm are unable to live

its during pregnancy, but discharge is suppose to ease the way for sperm to fertilize.

Egg white mucous is needed for sperm,as it is the right consistency for it to swim through.the sperm cannot get through other mucous,it is too thick and acidy.so,yes,in a way you are right.
The right consistency is during ovulation, usually midway between cycles.the mucous is stringy, wet and stretchy, similar to egg whites
