Howdy,

Many believe hamburgers are named after Hamburg, Germany. That is true. However, when it comes to "who invented the hamburger," the answer's a bit more vague.

NPR (link below) researched this question back in 2002. They found that while Germans invented the "Hamburg steak," people didn't think to add a bun until years later.

The site further explains that there are a few theories as to who first put the meat on the bun. One is Louis Lassen. He was the original owner of Louis' Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut. According to legend, "in 1900 one of Louis' customers wanted lunch in a hurry, so the cook put a beef patty between two slices of white bread." Voila, the hamburger was born.

Charles Nagreen (aka "Hamburger" Charlie) is another contender for the crown. Apparently, Nagreen was a fair vendor in 1885. Being a savvy businessman, he realized "fairgoers on the move would have an easier time eating his meatballs if he made them more portable. Two slices of white bread later, the hamburger was born."

The article goes on to list several more theories. "What's Cooking America" (link below) has a timeline for all things hamburger. Both sites make for good reading.

pass the ketchup,

Mike

The name comes from Hamburg, Germany, where it was first marketed as "Hamburg Steak". It was eventually introduced into the US, where it evolved into its present form & the rest is history.
