I believe you mean "defragment".
If you use Windows XP, it's listed in START / Programs / Accessories / System tools
When your computer stores information, it can't always put it all in one large block together, so defragmenting analyzes your hard drive, and tries to put everything that is used together "nearer" each other, to reduce search times by the processor and such.

Defragment is the process where you take disconnected files that are strung all along the hard drive and putting them together into continual sections on the hard drive thus improving performance and shrinking the size of the FAT (File Allocation Table) which the computer uses to find files.
Try Start > Program Files > Accessories > System Tools and select the Disk Defragment program.
Run the Analyze function first to see just how fragmented your computer is and if it requires a defragment operation. The red colored sectors are the ones that need defragmentation.
When a computer saves a file it tries to put the file down in one area, but as files are lost, added to, written over and so on then the sectors become clogged with data so a file can't be laid down continuously, this forces the FAT to put part of the file in one location and another part in some other location. That's okay because the FAT keeps track of all this, but if there is to much fragmentation then it takes longer to find all the parts of the file and so call it up.

"Defragment"
The control options for your computer, located in the "Control Panel," include security, user options, and maintenance. The maintenance icon should lead you to an option that will allow you to rearrange files to make your computer run faster. If you do defragment, be sure you have enough time! My computer is usually out of service for a few hours while it's defragmenting.

Under your start menu find PROGAMS
Go to Accessories.
Find System Tools
Defrag should be there for windows.
Click on Defragment
If you don't defragment you will sooner or later have crashes and for sure a slow computer
Also there is a utility that is free.
It is called Diskeeper Lite. I like this one myself.
You can search for it by name
Best Wishes
You didn't say what system or version you are on.

In windows you go to:
start
Programs
Accessories
Systems tools
Disk Defragmenter
select the drive you want, and click the defragment button.
It's a good idea to analyze first, because that will tell you if defragmenting will help.
