Can I open my own business, whatever I wanted, whereever I wished, or only what and where the government said I could? Could I write a letter to the newspaper critizising the government without being arrested? Could I attend the church of my choice without repruccussions? Could I really feel secure and free?

You would find that different countries have more or fewer regulations. I read that Estonia is the most business friendly country in the world now. In some countries, environmental and other regulations are relatively strict, and opening your own business can get complicated.
But in terms of freedom of speech, expression, press, religion, sex life, and pursuit of happiness, most of Europe is freer than the USA. How much welfare you get also varies by country. Some countries are amazingly generous, and others are not. Taxes are a problem, but you get more for your money than USA. Just look at the public schools, for ex.

Don't matter because many Americans pay the same tax rates as Eurpoeans but don't receive the benefits. If you watched that Michael Moore Film about how the French have access to a govt paid nanny and all the other great perks they get... but they pay high taxes, about 50%. Unfortunately, many Americans also end up with a 50% tax rate even if they're in the lower 20% bracket, they still have to pay Social Security, State Income Taxes and this is just before they left work to deposit their check at the bank. Gasoline taxes to the states, some federal. Sales taxes Personal Prop taxes on their car, home and other forms of significant property (most personal items such as jewelery are excluded from these kinds of "ownership" taxes. May live in a city with local income taxes, typically 1% and ironically, the cities with the highest local taxes have the worst services including just letting the snow pile up until it melts and carry away the stacked up garbage they don't haul consistenly. By the time it is done, most working american adults pay 45-50% of their income to taxes.

Yes, you are free to earn something so that the government can give most of it to somebody else too lazy to work.
