First determine what area you want to become creative in, and then take some courses in that area, so you can determine if you have some talent in that field. Once you have found the area of talent, then you think of ways to improve and/or invent new methods and things for that field. You have to be fairly intelligent and apply yourself. Sometimes it is best to work with one or two and more others, as "think tanks" tend to produce the best results.
