Black Widow Spiders are not as reclusive as a person would suspect. I live in Central Missouri. We have them in/outside.
Look for unorganized webs that can be anywhere( the main spinning line can be 4' long.
The spiders will not necessarily be in a dark-out-of-the-way location.
The female is large and different looking than the male.
Immature Black Widows are the same shiny black but with variations, in dots of red or dots of black.
A female with egg sacs will bite repeatedly and that can be fatal to the animal or person she bites.
What's amazed me the most, living in this state, a long time, is how often Black WIdows are within inches and we are not aware. Had always been told to associate them with dark places, this is only half true.
Two years ago, on a very hot day, one of our Grand children came in from outside, insisting I go look at what he found. I had warned him many times not to touch anything outside without getting me first.
I have pet spiders and didn't want him (age 6) handling outside creatures. I was busy doing something inside the house but he was insistent to have me look at something, so I followed him. Was so glad. There almost in direct sunlight on his play equipment, about 4' off the ground was a female the size of 2 large green peas, she was guarding 2 egg sacs. Her web was erratic with one main line from the nest to the ground.
Last fall, there was a female by the front door We placed It in a jar where it survived for 6 weeks with no food. This summer, have found another on the front porch, right by the doorbell.

The number of black widow spiders in a given location depends on the the quality of the habitat. I have seen very large numbers of black widow spiders in outdoor places where there are lots of hiding places in wood, soil, or rocks; lots of shrubs (for building webs), and high concentrations of insects. Where all three of these things are not present, the spiders don't reach high numbers.
Finding one spider in your garage doesn't mean there is a bunch of other black widows. In a garage, the habitat for the spider is probably mediocre - not many insects to catch, few places to build a web, and marginal hiding places. Most likely, there are other black widows nearby, but you would have probably noticed by now if they were present in large numbers.
Spiders are extremely sensitive to flea bombs that contain pyrethrins, which are natural chemicals that are not harmful to mammals. One flea bomb will wipe out all the spiders in a house for several months.

It could've come in with the grapes. It could've crawled off some other fruit at the market and you just happened to bring it home with you. Not all black spiders are black widows. Try not to worry.

I'd say there are probably more around, but maybe not as big. I grew up with these spiders. They are poisonous, but I actually like them because they are so shy and you can expect them to build their web close to the ground. If they are outside or in a dark corner in the garage, etc., and if there are no children around, I'd suggest leaving them alone. They are just being spiders and deserve to live their life.

Yes and no. Spiders don't really like to be crowded by other spiders unless they were mating. Even then, spiders often kill and eat each other. Your chances of having a group of spiders is probably slim. Maybe just a few, not by the hundreds or anything.

Found a black widow in my shed last year. Perfect red hour glass. Found one this year underneath my pool pump, straight red line instead of hour glass. Any one else seen this?
