They still play each other six more times this year and it would be a tough up-hill battle for the Yankees, but possible.

Yes, the Yankees can overtake the Red Sox. The question is will they? Ever since the All-Star break, they've been on fire. Unfortunately, they haven't been scoring lots of runs lately. They finally broke through on Sunday against the Orioles by scoring 10 runs. I believe that the Yankees have a much better chance at the Wild Card because the Indians and the Mariners have been slumping of late. The Yankees still have 57 games left to play in the regular season, so you never know. They can suddenly go on a hot streak and take over the lead in the AL East in a matter of weeks if the Red Sox play poorly. The Yankees have an easy schedule this week with games against the White Sox and the Royals. The Red Sox have a fairly easy schedule in August. The only good teams that they'll play are the Angels and the Mariners. I'm a die hard Yankees fan, so I'll definitely be rooting for them to take over the AL East.

They can because they are 8 back and still play them 6 more times this year. There are a lot of games left. I have been a Yankee fan for as long as I could watch them on TV in NY but I do not think they are going to catch them. I think they will take the Wildcard and be in a better position anyway. I don't worry about the Red Sox, they started off hot but have since have come back to earth. I worry about the Angels and Seattle. Whoever wins that division will give the other teams fits.

No, they are way too far back, and time is running out. Boston's pitching will prevent them from blowing their current 8 game lead. Look at the numbers: Boston is 64-41 with 57 games remaining. Realistically, the WORST record they could possibly have over those 57 games would be about 32-25. That would mean they would finish the year at 96-66. The Yankees (who are 56-49), meanwhile, would have to go 41-16 (an unrealistic .719 winning percentage) to win 97 games and take the division. The best the Yankees can hope for is the Wild Card.

I am a die hard Yankee fan, mathematically they have a chance and that's about it! Forget about catching the sox. They need to focus on the wild card from here on out. They don't need to win the AL because it hasn't resulted in anything the past 5 years anyways. Look at St. Louis last yr. They backed into the playoffs on the last day of the season and ended up winning it all.

They can and they will. I am not a Yankee fan but if you compare how far back they were in the standings to where they are now. Sox were something like 20 games ahead of them and they cut it to 8. dude its only a matter of time

No, my thought is that the yankees will be in the lower part of the Al east. The sox will crush them, but the Brewers have the Series!

The way Cleveland is just sitting around - and Detroit, too - the Yankees have a better shot at the Wild Card. I think Boston will win the division by an easy 10 games.

At this point the Yankees should focus on the wild card, and getting into the playoffs... from there it's a fresh start...
(For the record... i NEVER want the Yankees to win unless they're playing the Mets)
