You will find cheap campervans and reliable campervans but cheap reliable campervans are few and far between. Look in the classified advertisements in the Sydney Morning Herald or the Daily Telegraph on a Saturday (both are online). I understand there is a cash-only used car market at Flemington where you buy directly from the seller. Backpacker hostels are another likely source as travellers sell their vans at the end of their stay.
Whatever you buy it must come with a roadworthiness certificate if it is not currently registered and you are entitled to ask for an NRMA inspection of any car you buy. The vendor cannot refuse this but you will have to pay for it. Do it and you will know how reliable your cheap van is likely to be.

I have had personal experince with the servies of aussiecampervans.com from sydney. They also have offices in most of the big cities. The servcie, the motorhome we rented and the prices, everything was great and there was never any trouble with the vehicale as well. There ar emany other, but these guys are good inwhat they do. I am recommending it becasue I have used there services.

You might want to rent one.
That way you can guarantee that it will be in great working order and you don't have a huge outlay of expense.
Otherwise I would try putting a WANTED ad on a few websites or in the paper. And check out the classifieds.
Maybe you could even advertise it as a swap for something you no longer need.

my friend picked one up at a place in kings cross in behind the police station. not sure its still there but ask around the hostels is best bet. there is a hostel right ontop the train station it was called schoolhouse i think, ask in there
