My asus computer is 2 years old. When i right click on Partition C, under properties it says 9.75Gb capacity, while when i click on Partition D it says 27.4 Gb capacity.
Combined it makes 9.75+27.4=37.15 Gb of memory, space available.
This is huge!!!!
Why when i do buy a computer i read often under memory: 1Gb or 2Gb?
What is that?
I need to understand it better.

These are 2 different types of memories.

The computers RAM (Random Access Memory) is what you see advertised, as 1Gb or 2Gb typically. This memory is used while the computer is powered on, and is lost when powered off.

The hard drive capacities are also measured using the same unit, but refer to how much permanent data a drive can hold on it. They usually range any where from 40G to over 1024G (1 Terrabyte). You do not lose this information when you power off the computer.

What you're seeing under C and D is the amount of hard drive space. The 1 GB or 2 GB memory you're referring to is RAM, Random Access Memory.

The difference is that hard drive space is storage space your computer uses for programs and data. The more you have, the more things you can store. RAM is the memory the computer uses to do things. The more RAM you have, the more things you can do at the same time OR the faster you can do things.

To put it another way, consider your computer to be like a library. Hard drive space is how big the shelves are, and how many books you currently have on them. RAM determines how fast you can read the books.

The 37.15 GB is the amount of space on your harddrive. The harddrive is a permanent form of storage. It is where all of your files on your computer are stored.

The memory you are referring to thats 1GB or 2GB is called RAM. It is a temporary form of storage.

The reason for the two different ways to store things is because a hard drive is a lot slower than RAM. RAM keeps files that are currently being used in storage because it has a lot faster read time.

For instance, say you have yahoo messenger installed on your computer. Before you start the program, all of the yahoo messenger files reside on your hard drive. Once you start the program, all the neccesary files are loaded into your RAM so you can use the program without it taking forever to respond.

Hope this helps.

The 27 gb you are seeing above is your hard drive space. Not memory. RAM (Random Access Memory) is used for your system to process information. Your hard drive space is used to store data when the computer is off or that data is NOT in use. RAM Clears when you shut down.

1-2 gb of memory on a pc is actually pretty good now a days.

That is your Hard Disk space. This is where all your files (pictures, music, videos, programs) are stored to. Most computers you buy these days have well over 300GBs of HD space.

The 1GB and 2GB memory allocations you are referring to is RAM (Random Access Memory). In simplified terms, this is super-fast memory that your processor dumps information while its working.

HD memory (refered to as space) has very little to do with the speed of your computer. RAM Memory amount does, 2GB is a very good amount of memory for most modern applications.

To check and see how much RAM you have, right click on "My Computer" and hit "Properties" at the bottom. It will be listed next to your processor speed.

Ther is a huge deference between these to the first is storage memory where you can store files, pogroms, movies, games the other is RAM which is random access memory which the computer use to load software on to when ruining then save it on the storage memory (Hard Disc Drive) after finishing. a 2 GB computer is a god deal (not locking on the other spec).

I would say you looking at RAM memory, which 1 - 2 gb is the norm.

when looking at Hard drive space like what you described, anything over 100 GB what they have.

when you read the c or d partition that is your hard drive that stores programs etc permanently until you delete them. the other memory you are referring to is called ram memory and it only stores programs or things you may have downloaded temporarily. it gets deleted automatically when you close the program down or shut your computer off.
