What are record companies' priorities?

What are record companies for? I know they are for help artists making and releasing albums, but what else? do they like publish the music and all? because ive always wondered why there are record companies, and why artists cant release their albums on their own.

The first priority is money. The second is reputation for having the best music.

The third is to get you to stop downloading, which comes back to the money thing.
