Aging is a process that all biological things undergo. As the cells that make up your body divide (as they must, because new cells replace old cells all the time), things called telomeres break and shorten. The telomeres are responsible for making sure that the cells they control perform their functions correctly. When the telomeres get too short, the cells start to die off because they are malformed or unable to perform crucial tasks.

Many things can shorten or break telomeres, from free radicals (which is why antioxidants in tea and vegetables are so popular) to radiation from the sun or other things.

Death occurs when organs start to die. When one dies of old age or natural causes, that is just a polite way of saying organ failure. When you get old enough, the telomeres cause cells in your heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and other organs to die or malfunction. This means that your heart does not get blood everywhere that it needs to go and that your lungs don't do a good job of oxygenating the blood. The liver can't break down toxins, and the kidneys can't get rid of waste. As the body becomes less and less able to perform crucial tasks, the weight of the demands builds up, and the organs fail even more. Eventually, the organs stop working altogether.

Death, though certainly tragic when loved ones die, is necessary. When organisms die, they free up resources for younger generations, and their bodies contribute to enriching the soil as they decompose. If nothing got old and died, there would simply not be enough room or resources for anything to survive.

Maybe you weren't looking for a scientific answer, but know that yours is a very common question, not just for children (I recall tearfully asking my mother this at the age of 5) but also for adults throughout the course of their lives. It is important to ask such questions, because death quite literally allows other things to live... death really is a part of life. If we attempt to understand it and accept it instead of fear it and stop it, things will be much more peaceful and painless in general.

uh, considering where you posted this, you probably don't want a lecture on oxidation, and a reminder to drink more green tea and eat your tomato's :)

and you'll likely get plenty, "bc Adams sin..."

so i propose this to you, i think your question is like a unborn baby asking why it must loose the umbilical cord, "watter" and make the "big squeeze, our physical death is only the start of our real existence, what we have a spiritual death following that depends on what we did w/ Jesus.

Because it's just the way it is

P.S. I asked myself the same question when I was 6-7 years old.

Well, I hope you've heard this before....Its the part of life. God made it that way for the purpose of having a body and create your personality so you will be judged one day. If we lived for ever the plan of salvation could never be fulfilled.
