I'm doing a project for a potential employer, and I need some opinions.

When this event (not going to name it) was first created, it was a Fun Run in May.

The second time it was held, the Fun Run was in April.

Neither held very good numbers.

Being in the Kansas City area, I am thinking that a fall-based Fun Run would be more efficient as high school cross country runners could participate.

Also, I was thinking it may be nice to hold it in conjuction with a large event in the area, such as the season opener for the Chiefs. Since they would play on a Sunday, the event could be held on a Saturday.

Thoughts?

In other words: what do you see as being the best and most profitable time to hold a Fun Run for a nonprofit organization?

Usually specific races fall on specific days (first Saturday in June, etc.), so your first tip is to take a look at the year's schedule. There's probably a weekend that's relatively free from a big race.

Spring and fall probably will work best for casual runners in Kansas City, as a summer Saturday morning might be hot for the casual participant. Don't count on high schoolers, though, as some coaches are pretty tough about allowing students to do such runs. I've found that most Saturdays work better than Sundays; you're going up against church and in the fall, football.

Once you pick the date, the more important point is to get the word out. Attend other races ahead of time and hand out flyers. Get a list of area runners and mail them flyers. Write up a news release and send it to the local outlets (don't forget the Pennysaver; it usually prints anything). And check with those who ran or volunteered last year to see what improvements can be made.

It's tough to have a successful race, but that ought to help you. Good luck.

FaZille, Kansas City? I'd say in September or October, would be a good month, not too hot not too cold! Your friend Jimmy.
