I would do it before and look for other problems at the same time. Also check all fluid levels and change the air and fuel filters if it's time for that. Check the brakes and air in the tires also. May save a break down on the road.

If you went the whole trip without changing it you'd be 1300 miles over your oil change limit. If its synthetic oil, it should be ok because of two reasons. But then i'd change it as soon as you got back.
1) Synthetic Oil is generally all around better than regular oil.
2) Driving for a long time on the highway is easier on oil than a lot of stop and go driving.
If its conventional then I'd change it before the trip for sure.
However there is a third option.
If its conventional it should be ok to go 500 miles over the oil change on Highway miles. Then i'd change the oil when you got to your destination (if possible). That way you have nice fresh oil on the way back.
Overall though, the best thing to do is change it before if you have the time. It's only gonna cost you like...$3 extra dollars since your changing it 300 miles early. No big deal.

You should change the oil first. According to your statement you are about to travel 1600 miles and are only 300 from needing a change. Assuming that you will also do some driving once you reach your destination you will be well over due for a change. During a normal 3000 mile interval over 17000 gallons of oil pump through the filter. What happens is if you go to long, the filter can no longer filter the oil. This will allow dirt and debris to circulate through the motor, and for sludge to form inside the engine. Either of these situations will not only effect your engines life, but can reduce fuel economy also. Hope that helps and have a safe trip!

Change it because your possably low on oil. And not knowing if you went only 3,500 miles or the 7,500 the manufacture says. Always change oil before a trip top off the windshield washer with solvent for bugs. and get all the tries inspected before high speed driving. And now is when you can really get an idea about how your cars gas milage is on the road...New airfilter too.

After.
Oil changing companies recommend every 3000 miles or 3 months......THEY WANT YOUR MONEY.....oil will not go bad in 3 months.
If you read your car's owners manual, I bet it recommends changing the oil every 5000 miles (3500 miles in extreme driving conditions).
If you are truly worried, get it changed while on your trip. There are Jiffy lubes everywhere.
