There's really no cleaning a matress. If getting another one is out of the question I would try steam cleaning the matress.

Try the stain removers/deodorizers you get at pet stores- that is designed to remove smells and stains from pet accidents- you will have to douse the area, then let it dry. I used it for an elderly relative's bed after she had a really bad night- it worked really well. It comes in a big jug for around $20.00. That's a lot cheaper than a new mattress, plus, it isn't toxic and isn't harmful to your lungs or pets.

If it is stains you are worried about, I suggest that you just stop worrying. You don't use a mattress without a covering, so it doesn't really matter what it looks like. You should have a mattress cover under your sheet. You can also get a vinyl mattress cover to use under your mattress cover. They are designed for people who are allergic to mites/mite dust.

If it is actually odors that are the problem, try Febreeze. It was designed to take care of odors in fabrics and upholstery.

Following the directions exactly, use an upholstery shampoo to clean dirt and soil from your mattress surface. Or, mix a mild detergent with water until suds form. Apply the dry suds only to the soiled area using a sponge. Wipe the area with a sponge that has had warm water wrung from it. Allow the area to dry thoroughly.
Do not allow the interior padding of the mattress to get wet.

Let your mattress dry.

Go to Walmart.

Get a mattress pad. I got one for a twin mattress for $6.00.

Go home.

Put the mattress pad on your bed.

Surprize!!! It's like a new mattress. Not only dose it hide the stains that are there, it keeps new ones from showing up.

I use resolve (the same stuff you use for carpets & upholstery). My favorite kind is the Oxy power kind in the double barrel can. Its a little more expensive but well worth it.

Try using a carpet shampooer, use the same attachments that you'd use on furniture.
