my grandad, he was my best friend and my hero i loved him to bits, his mother was blinded in a cotton mill accident his father bailed and his siblings were all put in a home. he the baby was kept and his 8yr old sister to do chores and nurse his mum and him.there was no social security and the survived on kind neighbours tit bits a shameful existance his xmas one year was just one sugar mouse passed in by a neighbour.his sister fell pregnant down the line which was so frowned upon so 70 odd years ago, so grandad moved her to a new area and guised himself as her husband till such time she was established and thought fondly of in the community and he could leave the neighbours believing they divorced.he swore he would marry and father many happy belly filled children.he married nan and they had nine kids raised through the war grandad bought nan the only washing machine for miles and she would take in washing to feed the kids and during air raids she n grandad would sit the bails of washing on their heads for protection and leave it on the peoples door steps. For the corination of the queen grandad was the only neighbour with a telly and he remembered how his neighbours had helped him and he had the whole street shoulder to shoulder in his parlour all watching a 6 inch screen of the event. He went to work in the dark and arrived home in the dark infact there was many people over the years who didnt know of his existance until his retirement.he worshipped my nan and educated himself by reading encyclopedias and dictionaries he loved words but was unable to do this until his children were all raised.A pure and more unselfish man i have yet to meet.Nan died and my fit spritey grandad who did all the chores n shopping for her as she was frail just couldnt be without her.He went down hill rapidly mini stroke after mini stroke until he left for good.not just me but the world lost the best thing to happen to it that day. That was 13 years ago and i can still bring him before my eyes to this day as i knew every line on his face from the constant being in awe of him.He saw his siblings most times he left the house but they would curse him down for being the blue eyed boy of his mother they didnt know the stavation and of his best friends death at 8 yrs old from falling from a sugar lorry at the docks trying to did a hole in the packaging so skin and bone they were.the boy went under the wheel of the wagon and grandad would not leave.they came and scraped the boys remains with a shovel and a sack so little of it there was when crushed and grandad stayed till the last. heres to grandad jimmy joe and all he stood for.He was thee Hero to top all others. If i could get one more day with him id willingly die when the sun went down and with thee biggest smile to boot xxxxx
