b/c thats the only way they really make money. movie theaters don't really make a profit on ticket sales.

For the amusement parks, it's because they have a lot of staff to pay, plus their bills for their uitilities have to be through the roof, so it's easy to charge a lot for food and drinks. Plus, they know people will pay those prices, so they charge what they want.
For the movie theatres, they don't make a profit from the ticket sales. That money goes right back to the studios who release the movies, so the theatres have to make their money somewhere. That's where the concession sales come in. That's also why we sneak in the candy when we can (why spend $4 for a large box of Jr Mints at the movies when you can pay $2 at the drug store?). We've also need people order pizza's and get them delivered to the theatre, as well as bringing in Arby's bags with food and drinks.
We went to moves yesterday and spend $12.50 for a large Coke, box of Jr. Mints, and a small popcorn. Talk about a ripoff.

This is why I have my moviewatchers card for AMC. At least I can earn points and get coupons for discounts towards food and drinks, and occasionally the free large popcorn and soda.

what are you going to do? leave the park or theater? They got you. Supply and Demand: Economics 101. They have the supply and the only supply (unless you sneak in your own), so they can charge what they want.

My sugguestion is to look for theatres that have special things going. A local theatre here sells a Tshirt for $20 bucks good for the whole year and when you wear it to the theatre you get a free small popcorn, and they sell a plastic souvenir cup good for the year for like $5 and everytime you take the cup in they only charge $1 to fill it.

Movie theaters make most of their money selling snacks and food, since the ticket sales will be mostly going back to the movie studios.

Amusement Parks do it since you can't go anywhere else for the food, so its kind of a built in extra cost for staying there so long that you get hungry and thirsty!

It does seem crazy to spend $5 on a pop that only costs them maybe a quarter or so to give it to you!

At movie theaters I have heard that this is the main source of income. Ticket sales go back to the movie, and the costs incurred creating it. The movie theater is not cheap to keep running, so this is one way they make up for it. Parks are probably similar. The money made on ticket sales goes toward creating and mainaining rides, booths, the park, etc. The profits most likely come from souveniers and refreshments.

When money is spent in so many ways to satsufy the customer or at least to offer it to the customer, it has to be made back for a profit so ever though a single bottle of coke only costs them about 92 cents they'll sell it for 3.50 just to make more, America is a capitalist society.

They know your locked in. A lot of those places ban you from bringing in your own stuff. It's like go with out a drink and food or pay insane prices. It's not fair. When I go to six flags I bring a cooler and leave it in the car, take a break for lunch and sit in the parking lot.

Snack prices are high because that is where the theater makes it's money..A med soda that costs you 5$ costs the theater about 5 Cents! cup and all!!! They really don't make any money on the movie itself sooo..They need to make rent, insurance, payroll etc. from somewhere.

Regal theater gives free popcorn on Tue nights (still getting that soda money...and maybe candy money) OR bring Your own candy and soda and just buy the popcorn OR rent from blockbuster..the cheapest of all!!

Your ticket money barely covers the cost of showing the film. Concession is money the actual theatre can make to pay wages, opperating costs etc.
