Already decided on a macbook...
Now I just need to decide what specs to buy.
I am entering college as a freshman and want/need this laptop to last 4+ years. I'll be using it for school-related tasks (word, firefox) and music (not excessively; I barely have 1200 songs after 4 years of high school). What specs do I need in a laptop? Thanks for the help!

Unless you plan on doing anything music production related or programming. I wouldn't really say a Macbook would be an ideal purchase due to their price. But, if that's really what you want then I'd say at least 2GB of RAM, 3.4GHZ Processor, and 160GB Hard drive. Unless you are doing any gaming, video specs should not matter much other than onboard.

Need a bit more information. Are you planning to use any multimedia software like Final Cut Studio or Adobe software like Photoshop, Premiere, Flash or After Effects? Are you interested in doing any 3D? If you are just interested in keeping up with your iTunes and wordprocessing any of the MacBooks will do. Get one with a Superdrive so you can burn DVDs and CDs to store your tunes and back up your files. Try the different sizes out, if you are a large person the small 13" might be too hard to use, but it is easier to carry around, and get a good sturdy padded carrycase. If you want to keep it for four years, get a good harddrive and put some RAM in it. Be sure to get Apple Care and replacement insurance if you can, and definitely a cable lock that works for your computer. You can also research some of the new security software that will help police to locate your computer if it is stolen. Don't forget students get generous Apple discounts - buy it from your college campus store.

Your college may have laptops available with all the required software for your course of study loaded.

Quite often colleges insist on certain laptops to be purchased through the college.

This way the can control the network standards and setup. Also you get all the college updates pertaining your courses.
The price may be a little higher, but it normally includes IT support.

It does not sound as if you require a high end laptop. You may want to upgrade to the largest hard drive available for the laptop of your choice. This will assure you have ample room for your music files and your school files.

Good Luck and study hard as it will pay off.
