(Why do they call the Democrats the "tax and spend" party?

The Democrat Controlled Congress with the 13% approval rating is doing what democrats do best; take your money!

"Unfortunately, Democrats have approved a budget that fails to extend the bulk of the 2001 and 2003 tax relief — most of which is set to expire in the next few years — resulting in a staggering tax hike of at least $736 billion. Most notably, the Democrats’ budget fails to extend the lower tax rate on capital gains and dividends and most of the income tax relief we’ve passed, the two provisions that have done the most to spur the strong economic growth of the past several years. In addition to this massive tax hike, Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee are also proposing another growth-stifling tax hike to pay for alternative minimum tax relief, this one a 4 percent tax hike on higher income Americans and small business owners."

Yes, they do.

When Democrats raise taxes people can't spend as much, which means less money taxed, which = LESS REVENUE.

When Republicans lower taxes people can spend more, which means more money taxed, which = MORE REVENUE.

All parties are to blame. How do you know a politician is lying, his lips are moving. Politicians of all stripes have been lying to the general public since John Adams. Okay, suppose Dems want to raise taxes here and there, that is bad. Reps only want to raise taxes for the poor and lessen taxes for the rich. Is that better? Independents say one thing or the other. No one in politics tells the truth and they don't rat each other out on it either. They may condemn personal traits, but when it comes to political finagling they never contest one another. Why? Because they are thinking up other ways to steal your hard earned money. Why do politicians get their salaries (which are extensive) free from your tax dollars? Their medical bennies? Even after they retire, everything is still paid by your taxes, why? Because they have been secretly changing the Constitution to suit themselves. Unlike Georgieboy who just disregards the Constitution whenever he feels like it. In my opinion.

I have to think a lot of those that are for more taxes don't pay much or any now. I have to wonder if they realize just how it's not just income taxes but all that everything else is taxed also.
Isn't it funny why all these millionaire's saying they want to pay more taxes don't? After all what to keep them from adding more bucks to their taxes and sending them in to the government? Any of you that want to pay more taxes please do as I think I pay my share and more now.

Another slap at the non-existant 'liberals'. This strawman enemy of the reactionary right has been beaten bloody, but the 'wingers aren't inclined to show it any mercy. By beating the strawman they don't have to deal with any real problems...it's enough to get people to fear the 'liberal' boogyman...at least it's been enough for the last few years. But the right is like a dog chasing a car...in 2000 they caught the car, but they could never figure out what to do with it. Actually, the incompetence of this bunch is what's 'staggering'...the rich and the corporations have gotten richer with zero improvment in the situation faced by the American wage-earner. The Bush Junta has forced us into a forever war with no natural stopping place using the lives and limbs of our troops and all the money they can borrow from China. Don't tax and spend seems to be the best they can come up with, and what they spend on doesn't increase either our safety or social or physical infastructure. Dumb and dumber! I can't believe these ditto-heads are for real!

If the Democrats are called the "tax and spend" party, then I'd hate to see what they call the Republicans. Reagan and Georgie have spent more during their Administrations than every Democrat Administration.

Turn off the FOX News, and maybe you'd realize this.

I think a better question would be "Do Liberals ever support lowering taxes?". They'll claim they don't support raising taxes, but that we must do it in order to pay off the deficit. Yet when we (supposedly) had a budget surplus under Clinton, they didn't think we should give that surplus back to the people who created it. That's because liberals believe they can spend the money we earn better than we can spend it ourselves.

It's a curious feature of Republicans and neocons that they're very happy to spend trillions of dollars that America doesn't have on the military and military adventures while at the same time claiming to be the party of fiscal responsibility.

Well, here in the "reality-based community" we recognize that running a country costs money, even if you're not eager to flush money down the drain on illegal wars and tax cuts for the rich. As someone on this forum said, somebody has to be adult and make sure that the bills are paid.

The liberals just don't understand that higher taxes hurt the economy. President Bush's tax cuts have resulted in more funds for the federal gov. The problem is the politicians in DC can't control their pork projects---that goes for both parties.

Let's see: Bush has pushed through legislation that sent over a STAGGERING amount of $736 billion dollars for the Iraqi invasion/occupation; and you are upset that an unreferenced quote states that Democrats approved a budget that results in a STAGGERING tax hike of at least $736 billion?

Where do you think the money is coming from, in order to pay for Bush's faux pas? Tax dollars.

STAGGERING, isn't it?

I don't always support tax increases. In fact, I rarely do. But your question begs another - Who will pay for the money we're spending in Iraq?
