I think it's mostly because they get so very large (2' is not uncommon) and will of course eat anything they can fit in that huge mouth. Almost no tank mate is safe and very, very few people have a tank adequate to house such a beast. A shop across town from me houses large fish in a show tank in the shop. They have a Peacock bass that is coming close to outgrowing the 600 gallon show tank.

So yeah, they are hard to keep because they are huge, pwoerful aggressive fish. Remember, in southern FL they have problems with the pecock bass killing off the native largemouth bass.

shear size, they are alittle picky on water temp.

The reason why they trive well in miami is due to the temp of the water. They are harder to find in orlando as the water is just a few degress colder.

But captive bred ones tend no to be as picky.

I love peacock bass, i have 8 of them and love them. They will get large depending on the species. There are about 3-5 species of "peacock bass"
Based on color patterns.

But most of them will grow very large, they are consider a sport fish in the amazon.

They will eat about anything, bt again the shear size and the tank they require makes them no for the everyday fishkeeper.
