Consider ASUS. Not many people know this brand, a maker of TOP QUALITY motherboards. Many of the popular laptop brands are just system builders that buy their motherboards from ASUS, Foxconn, etc. ASUS is very popular among PC entusiasts and PC hardware geeks.

If you want to buy it and get one right away you could go to a local Office Max store and ask to speak with a computer tech (most Office Max stores nation wide are starting to have at least one Tech on hand all the time.) They will most of the time go through with you on what kind you are wanting to get and how much hard drive and RAM you are going to need. Most new Laptops have a minimum of 1024 MB of RAM or Higher. There is a HP dv9420 laptop out at Office Max that has 240 GB of Hard drive and 2048 MB of RAM. They also do offer a 2 or 3 year service plan which would cover accidental damage and normal wear and tear on the laptop which would cover up to 2 perphials when purchased at the same time. I myself haven't heard many good things about Gateway or Dell laptops, The ones I have the highest return customers on are the HP, Compaq and Toshiba laptops. My store recently started carrying Sony Vaio Laptops as well. Which are also very good laptops. The prices vary on the laptops from state to state because of various costs to ship it out there and the cost of living as well.

There are several laptops out there designed for students. Based on what you said, first thing is to look at something with a decent size hard drive. I would recommed starting with 120 GB and going up.

Next would be speed. Not just processor speed, but memory is important. The reason for this, is if you want to listen to music, surf the web, do your homework, and check your myspace, you will want a machine that will do all of that, and not take 5 minutes to switch windows. 1.5 to 2 GB of ram would be good. (Espically if your running vista) I personally prefer AMD processors, so I would recommend something with an AMD Dual-Core (1.7 GHz or more).

i recommand going with gateway, they got really good customer service, better then Dell, hp. plus the gateway laptops look cool and are cheaper then most other places =D. I dont recommand buying a high end laptop, for what you wanting to do. When you get it, i recommand getting Broadband ( if you want to go wireless you well need a router as well)
