From yellow tomato seed looking poop to baby acne, I'm finding out a lot of things I've never heard before about newborns, what did you "never hear" before you had your baby?

My husband didn't pay attention when I read the baby books, so he had no idea she was going to be bluish and gross when she came out. He thought she was dead, and he was trying to get my attention away from her so I wouldn't notice. He was absolutely terrified, and still jokes about how I delivered a zombie baby.

I was not prepared for the first few weeks. No one tells you how downright awful the first few weeks at home can be. I was also not prepared to have an almost 9 lb baby - I'm not very big, and all the nurses kept looking at me, looking at her, and trying to figure out how that happened.

Cleaning their ears and clipping their fingernails. Never in a million years did i think i would have to that! Not that i mind, it just never occurred to me that i would have to do those things. That was the first few things, before the projectile vomit, awful constipation and having to change my clothes every few hours. Oh, and my son had to have surgery on his skull when he was 3 months old because his soft spot (sagital suture) was prematurely closed (closed before he was born). That was the biggest surprise of all and the hardest one to swallow. These were all gross or bad surprises. The BEST surprise was the overwhelming joy i felt and how i did it with relative ease, and that i loved it so much i am actually expecting me second. There is nothing like being a mom, that's THE SURPRISE!!!

My oldest:
*how she slept through the night from day one
*the gross crusty umbilical cord
*how I could carry her around enlessly, as if she were attached to my arm
*The various sorts of poop and unpredictable blowouts
*How tiny she always seemed
*how she never grew much hair (until about 3 yrs.)

my twins:
*how they woke up during the night at the same time
*how hard it was to convince people I should breastfeed
*how naturally breastfeeding two eventually became
*how different they were from each other
*how I now needed a swing and bouncy seat, and vibrating bassinette (all of which my oldest never had)
*how tiny they always seemed
*how proud my 3 year old was to be a big sister

What surprised me the most was "He fit in there?!!"
Then yeah, the yellow poop, but I'll take that any day compared to the tar-like poop!
And also, my patience surprised me. I was afraid I would be impatient but it's impossible to be impatient with such a beautiful being who relies on you for everything.

I didn't know anything! Even with my college degree, I was a total airhead when it came to newborns. Baby acne, spit up, the variety of bottles, the fact that they have no tears until a few months later....EVERYTHING!!!

Nothing was a surprise to me...I had already read every book out there. Except my child was so good and quiet. I was worried that she was developmentally slow or something. But turns out she's just a quiet, docile baby who can throw a fit when she wants too.

Yeah baby acne, who knew. I was surprised at the teething. My son had them at the age of 6 months.

That he was so small 5lbs and 5oz everyone told me I was going to have 8lb baby.. I never new that I would never be able to sleep again.. I was so tired but when I look at my son I new it was all worth it... Being a parent is a lot of work.. But when you look at your baby you know that this is what life is all about...

She had a unibrow, and an angel's kiss between her eyes.
She NEVER spit up. Ever. (And she only vomited twice in her life as a baby..... due to the fault of me and her babysitter)

I didn't know about acid reflux until my baby had symptoms of it. Now I am an *expert* in treating it! lol.

I had to ask about her little toes being curled inward, but the doc said that it is normal until they start walking.

Now I can't believe how healthy she is.

that they were a pooping machine. Also that they eat every 2 hours on the dot! I'm so glad I'm passed that stage, I had PPD and it was very hard for me...
