Your new router should have a port that the ethernet Cat5 or Cat6 cable will plug in to, probably called a WAN connection. This is the cable that comes from the DSL modem. You will then have Lan ports you can connect directly to from the router if you want to go wired on either (you may need to purchase another Lan Cable if you want to locate the router more than a few feet from the connected computer). On the other, the laptop probably, you will likely want to go with wireless if the laptop has built in WIFI access.
Don't worry if you don't have built it wireless access. You can get a wireless access point, USB or PCMCIA most likely.

Linksys routers come with excellent instructions and are easy to set up but make sure you read them first. A common mistake made in setting up a router is failing to run the setup disc BEFORE you disconnect the Modem. This is necessary because the settings have to change to be able to connect more than one device to the router. D-Link is the same near as I can recall. If you want to read up before you buy or are waiting for the router to come in, check the link. It's Linksys' site but it's basic networking they cover. It won't really matter if you use their product except for specific reference to their equipment.

If you haven't purchased the wireless router yet, get one that has an Ethernet "WAN" (connects to comcast cable modem) and a 4 port switch for connecting to "LAN" (wired computers) and wireless. Such a thing exists.
