You are on a year trip to mars and you need to bring 5 people, what skills should the crew members have?

I'd want to have at least 2 who could fix problems on the spacecraft during the trip. (Engineer / tech)

I'd want one person dedicated to all the life support systems (spacecraft, lander, suits, etc.) (Engineer / tech)

Assuming we're going to land on the planet, at least 1 person who knows Martian geology/geography. (Scientist)

A doctor who could also function as a psychiatrist and diagnose mental or stress-related disorders among the crew members. (Physician)

You see where my priorities would be: Keep the ship operating, & keep the people operating.

Engineering: to keep the craft running the way it's designed to, and to make sure the landing craft will function when it's time to leave Mars
Astronomy/Astrophysics: To keep track of where we are.
Navigators/Pilots: To make sure we are where we're supposed to be. They'll also have to land and take off.
Communications: To make sure Earth knows we're still around.
Botanists/Agriculturists: to make sure we have enough to eat... likely to be a vegetarian venture..
Biologists, chemists, and geologists: to let us know what we have found when we get there.
Medical: Doctor, dentist to make sure we arrive and get back healthy.
Support: (cook, barber, clerk), So the operational crew can attend to their jobs. I suppose these duties could be shared by the crew-members.

Mars is a relatively short trip as space travel goes... probably less than a year. I doubt they're going to send a mission to Mars just orbit the planet, or just to land and come back. And it will be a little more difficult taking off... we've never done that from a planet with gravity similar to Earth. It'll probably be run like the Moon missions. A landing craft will be sent down from an orbiting command craft. The landing craft will be expendable, and will left behind to minimize the fuel requirement on the return trip. The command craft will navigate between Earth and Mars. The landing craft will be just to get the missions crew down to the planet and back, and to house the mission crew while on Mars. They may have some sort of tent-like dwelling in which to do their experiments to minimize contamination by anything from Earth. It would be great if the command and mission crew could change places to give each other a break, but with limited fuel, that's unlikely. Think of the size of the rocket necessary to launch a space shuttle.

Well... hmmm... I'd want to have a great pilot, and his or her back up.
I'd want to have a great mechanical engineer, skilled at improvising.
I'd want an on-site expert of geology, weather, and skilled in the medical field.
And, Miss October 2006. A year is a LOOONG time.

Cooking, technological skills, crew doctor, sense of humour, intellect, piloting skills, etc. Basically everything required for an expedition to Mars (well, except for the humour, but it might be boring if they didn't).

I think they should have the ability to travel faster than light, survive indefinitely in deep space, and shoot laser beams from their eyes. You never know what you might run into on Mars.

Being good chefs would help, too.

In the first place, you will need an Astrophysicist, Geologist or two plus your flight commander/PHD in say space medicine, and a good biologists. Other general skills would be a plus for sure. I hope I see it in my lifetime... I'm sixty so hurry would you?

I'd bring George Carlin, to keep me entertained. Bobby Flay and Emeril Lagasse, to cook for me. Dr. Phil, to keep me motivated. And Shakira.

The men should know how to cook and clean so the women don't have to do it all. And the women should know how to dance on top of tables to keep the men energized for their cooking and cleaning chores.
