How long would a war like that take?

It depends on how the rules of engagement are defined.

If the ROE in Iraq or Afghanistan were similar to those of WWII, things would have been over for quite some time.

Since the ROE in these two countries is more along the lines of Viet Nam, with politicians calling the shots and the media whining about every casualty, it will probably drag on for decades.

If you watch the movie "Blackhawk Down", you'll see our Special Forces and Rangers go against a whole town and do just fine. We really do great when our opponent wears a uniform and distinguishes itself from the civilians too. But, the quick answer is, we can drop bombs and make a grease spot out of the whole lot of them whenever we feel like it. So, yes, the USA can win a war against both a poorly armed/badlye disorganized opponent, as well as Saddams elite Republic Guard (we went through those guys like a hot knive through warm butter).

Depends. We can always win a military battle against a uniformed enemy fighting under the rules of warfare. When any woman or child can be turned into a bomb, then "winning" such a war is difficult. If you're talking about Iraq, then the only way to win is to install a govt (not a parliment) which can keep the peace. If you're talking about Al Quaeda, then the only way to win is to keep them from striking.

Yes, I'm certain of it.
It's just a matter of everyone uniting behind a single purpose.
I'm surprised things are going as well as they are considering that more than half of the nation is evidently opposed to current operations -Which incidentally, is just exactly what half the politicians had in mind.

Of course, silly. We'd know everything that the poor, badly organized country would do.

Because it takes one to know one.
