oscars, hump heads, red devils, green terrors, jack dempseys, mbuna cichlids, african cichlids will go crazy in gravel and sand substrate its very humorous to watch but any plants or ornaments WILL BE UPROOTED OR TIPPED OVER. these cichlids are all very lively and can be aggressive to other tankmates

Many cichlids like to dig. Sone of the larger South American cichlids are famous for it such as Oscars and Geophagus. Petsmart carries such things as Oscars and may have some of the others, but only consider such fish if you are willing to buy a 55 gallon or larger tank to house them.

There are also some smaller fish that dig particularly at mating time. Those include convicts and kribs, also often available at Petsmart.

Most Central American do. Are you thinking Jack Dempesy?

Oscar?

Be prepared for a huge tank for these guys... 55 gallon will house only one. Two will require at least a 75.
Plant on them wrecking everything! Plan on them beating up the heater.
Once they hit about 2 years old, they will be a foot long! They are only 2-3 months old when you see these cute little 2" fish...

Due to the nature of the water required by cichlids many people suggest using a crushed coral, because it will help buffer the PH to where they need it. When I kept them (I moved on to Salt Water) I used gravel, a med-small size and placed crushed coral in one of the bins of my filter. It was a large size penguin filter where you could place whatever medium you liked in one of the bins.

Convicts are good if you don't have a really large tank.I have gravel in my tank but my convict is constantly digging sometimes I have to replant his trees every day.
