I need to get a totally 100% protection sort of deal on my PC. I tried downloading Norton 360 off demonoid, but that just made me more confused. I am computer literate and all, but PC's confuse me. (I'm a new Windows use, coming from Mac).

Any ideas on how to stay safe for free?

And PLEASE, spare me the "Macs suck" flame. You're igonorant and unorigonal.

AOL Active Virus Shield powered by Kaspersky is currently the best free anti-virus (99.62% detection rate). The most popular free anti-virus programs (AVG and Avast) are complete junk with poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively). Norton is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans. You can download AOL Active Virus Shield from the link below. There is absolutely no spyware and it is completely free.

BTW - AVG does not achieve even a standard rating ("the proactive detection is low, while the number of false alarms is high"): http://www.av-comparatives.org/

AVG AntiVirus:
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10703202.html?tag=lst-0-1

AdAware:
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007/3000-8022_4-10708241.html?tag=lst-0-2

SpyBot:
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html?tag=lst-0-1

These are all free (and not trials). AVG will offer live watch over files to prevent viruses/trojans/etc... AdAware isn't a live watch, but it will help clean things up (especially if you're getting a lot of popups) and spybot does the same thing except for malware and spyware.

I also suggest Eusings Free Registry Cleaner:
http://www.download.com/Eusing-Free-Registry-Cleaner/3000-2094_4-10658410.html?tag=lst-0-1

It will look over your registry and find a lot of errors and fix them.
