What kind of software do major game producing companies use in order to develop games(for the graphics part i mean). Do they develop their own software platform to create models of the characters in the game or are they merely using software that currently exists in the industry. If so can you give me some examples of such software?

Maya and 3D Studio Max are the two big 3D asset designers. Most companies have their own custom tools and / or Max / Maya plugins that work with their own custom engine. Some even do everything in their own proprietary tools.

Photoshop is common for 2D artwork like interface and graphics, and again their are usually a lot of custom tools to fill this niche too which can be stand alone apps or plugins.

Almost all the big gaming companies create their own gaming engine. However, almost all of their gaming engines use either DirectX or OpenGL or both.

Sorry, but I myself don't really know what the pros use. However, if you want to try something that amatures use, and get a feel for it yourself, you may like to try to search for "mugen fighting game engine", or try http://www.gamemaker.nl/index.html!
